ALEC SHANKS
A Gouache Design for a Set or Curtain – “A Nocturnal Street Scene in Cubist Style”
Alec Shanks (English, 1904-1987) began working at the Royal Theatre in Birmingham and then went to Paris where he dºesigned for the Moulin Rouge in 1926. He worked first with Erte then worked freelance for Max Weldy creating costumes for the Folies Bergere. It was he who redesigned the interior of the theater which has contributed to its notoriety. During the 30s he returned to Britain where he became production manager of several theaters in London and occasionally in New York and Paris. In the late 30's he opened his own house sometimes employing Erte costumes.

JOSE DE ZAMORA

Jose de Zamora (Spanish 1890-1971) began with Paul Poiret for whom he drew a lot of models, which are often unfairly attributed to Poiret. From the 20s, he developed his talents for the Casino de Paris, le Bataclan, the Concert Mayol, the Palace, the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergere. In the 30's he returned to Spain for the Civil War. He reappeared in 1940 at the Casino de Paris until 1961 and the Mogador. In the mid-60s he returned to Spain and committed suicide in 1971, following the preparation of an exhibition on his work
 

ZIG (LOUIS GAUDIN) ZIG (French-1906 -1936)

Born Louis Gaudin, began around the age of 16 in 1922 to work for the Cigale. He worked for a long time for the Casino de Paris and the Folies Bergere, including making posters for Mistinguett and Josephine

René Ranson René Ranson (French, 1888-1977)

Was one of the major designers during the heyday of the Parisian music hall revue in the period between the two world wars. He was considered among the great heirs to the design tradition of the Ballets Russes. He worked for the Folies Bergère from 1924 to 1932, and along with contemporaries such as Erté, supplied costumes to the Max Weldy studio in Paris, which marketed them around the world. Ranson also designed for other theaters, such as the Paris Opera, and for several movie studios, including Paramount, Fox, and Pathé. During World War II. He was a founder of the Montmartre artists. Ranson took part in the French Resistance and designed for their publications.
